15 Copyright

Copyright can be a daunting subject and Flexible Learning would like to help you through the process of understanding the specific role copyright plays in the LIVE-streamed course setting. When in doubt about the resources you are choosing for your class, do not hesitate to speak to your instructional designer.  Below are a few ideas and resources to help you get started. All materials for educational distribution to students for LIVE-streamed courses, including print, video, audio, and materials obtained from an Internet site are subject to copyright clearance.

Films

During your LIVE-streamed lectures, you may wish to show videos in your course. Generally, showing videos from YouTube or other public websites is ok. Sometimes, streaming rights is required from some video owners. The University of Regina Library subscribes to a variety of streaming databases. The films titles will be listed in the Library catalogue, along with the licensing time frame.  If you do not see the film title, reach out to your instructional designer and they are able to assist.

Article Reprints

You may have required readings that are journal articles, or an excerpt from a book. The best way to distribute these is by using the Library ‘Reading List’ tool that is integrated within UR Courses. Often times publishers do not allow PDFs to be uploaded and links to these paywall articles can be hard for off-campus students to access without adding additional link information.  Talk to your instructional designer for more information about Fairdealing Guidelines.

Online Resources

Printing and distributing materials from a web site without getting permission to do so violates copyright. Generally, it is ok to post a link to these sites from UR Courses. Since copyright clearance can take time to obtain, advance planning with your instructional designer is necessary to ensure that the materials you wish to include in your LIVE-streamed course can be used.

Images

There are online image databases that contain images you might wish to show your students. Generally, it is ok to show images in a LIVE-streamed class but not to post these images to UR Courses unless permission has been granted to do so from a textbook publisher and/or third party vendor. Your instructional designer can help you to determine what permissions might be required to make an image available to students in UR Courses.
