Using Visuals

Here are good practice methods for using visuals in a LIVE class:

  1. Extend the display time of visuals: Allow more time for students to view and read the material on the screen compared to a face-to-face class.
  2. Practice with visual aids beforehand: Familiarize yourself with the visuals and ensure they are displayed correctly before the live-streamed course begins.
  3. Consider virtual backgrounds: If using a virtual background on Zoom, be aware that objects will not appear beside or behind you, so adjust your visuals accordingly.
  4. Use clear and visually appealing graphics: Opt for visuals that are visually engaging, easy to understand, and complement your teaching content.
  5. Provide verbal explanations: Accompany visuals with verbal explanations to enhance understanding and clarify any information that may not be readily apparent from the visuals alone.

PowerPoint and Font Size

Here are good practices for using PowerPoint:

    1. Choose appropriate colors: Consider different opinions on text and background colors, and opt for combinations that work well, such as light print color on a dark background (e.g., white text on a black or blue background).
    2. Maintain consistency and purposeful use of colors and themes: Organize your material by being consistent with color choices and themes throughout your PowerPoint presentation.
    3. Use a clear and readable font: Select a minimum 24-point, bold, sans-serif font like Arial. Limit the use of different fonts to maintain visual clarity and avoid clutter.
    4. Keep text concise: Limit the amount of printed material on each slide to a maximum of 6 lines, preferably using bullet points for better readability.
    5. Ensure clean and uncluttered design: Design your slides to be clean, uncluttered, and easily viewable on various screen sizes. Avoid overcrowding the slides with excessive text or graphics.

Note: The display that appears on your computer screen may not look exactly the same on the students screen especially the colours. Students may be viewing the material on various screen sizes and display formats.

What should I wear?

  1. Wear clothes that make you feel comfortable and that reflect your personality, allowing you to be at ease during the session.
  2. Avoid small patterns: Steer clear of clothing with small patterns, as they can create a jumping effect on the screen and potentially distract your students’ attention.
  3. Minimize bold patterns and strong contrasts: Bold patterns, checks, or strong contrasts can be visually distracting and may cause colors to bleed together, making it harder for students to focus on your presentation.
  4. Be mindful of noisy jewelry: Avoid wearing noisy jewelry that can create unwanted clanking sounds when they come in contact with the microphone, causing interference and distractions.
  5. Consider scarf-related sound issues: Be aware that they may muffle your voice or create swishing sounds that can disrupt audio clarity. Take this into account when choosing to wear a scarf during the session.

EQUIPMENT

Basic computer equipment is required. You will need a computer or laptop, a webcam, microphone and speakers or headset. You will also need a stable internet connection.

  • Many Laptops have a built-in webcam, microphone, and speakers.
  • Most webcams also have a microphone.
  • Some headsets have a microphone.
  • Using a smartphone for UR Courses is possible, but not recommended for instructors or students.
