Communicating with Students during the LIVE session

Creating a dialogue with your students during a LIVE session can be a useful and rewarding experience simulating the in-person experience. However it can be challenging with a high number of participants for all to be heard. In addition some students can be hesitant to speak up in any class with fear of having their voice heard by other students across all users. Consider using the following tools within your LIVE session on Zoom:

  • Polls – Creating a poll in your session can allow for you to ask multiple choice questions to your students. Advanced set up in your zoom account is needed to then use the polling feature during a class session  [See poll video link below]
  • Chat – In meeting chat function can be used by students to ask questions, respond to discussion and privately message the instructor and other students. It is recommend that a Teaching Assistance moderate the chat during LIVE lectures. [See chat video link below]
  • Raise hand feature & other icons – Call upon the student. When asking students a question give them time to  respond or to type a message in the chat.

  • PowerPoint slide prompts – Consider inserting blanks in your PowerPoint. Students can fill these in while you go through your presentation. This will encourage students to attend class and pay attention as you are teaching.
