UN SDGs & VIU: As a UNESCO designated organization, the Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region Research Institute (MABRRI) continues to amend approaches, create projects, and engage local citizens in activities that relate to the 17 SDGs. Throughout 2018 and 2019, MABRRI team investigated how VIU is currently meeting the SDGs and how VIU can continue to meet them in the future. To collect data the project involved a thorough review of VIU’s website, over 80 meetings with VIU faculty and staff, and a handful of community engagement events. The community engagement events were intended to raise awareness of the SDGs on campus, as well as gain feedback from the VIU community about how they felt VIU was doing regarding the SDGs and how VIU can do better. A final report highlighting how VIU is contributing to the SDGs was produced and handed over to VIU’s Office of the President. The VIU SDG Project engaged students, faculty, staff, and stakeholders in raising awareness on the SDGs, mapping SDG projects and curriculum across campus, and determining actions to continue to move forward on achieving the 2030 Agenda.

STARS (Sustainability, Tracking, and Rating System): STARS is a program of AASHE (The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education). It is a self-report framework for colleges and universities to measure their sustainability performance in all aspects of their institution. An institution can earn ratings ranging from reporter, bronze, silver, gold and platinum. AASHE has directly linked the program to the SDGs and its various credit categories have been linked to specific SDGs. The credit categories include: Academics, Engagement, Operations, and Planning and Administration. NSCC recently submitted for STARS 2.2 and a received a gold certification. The NSCC sustainability team worked collaboratively with various departments to gather data and information on sustainable development initiatives at all NSCC sites.
